Saturday’s Aro Fair being used to plan civil defence

CIVIL defence is the focus of Aro Valley’s annual community fair this weekend.

The fair coincides with Neighbours Day, so the organisers of the fair decided it would be a great opportunity to set up their community’s own civil defence plan.

“In the first half an hour after a civil emergency, the first people you will be able to speak to and ask for help are your neighbours,” one of the organisers Linda Beatson says.

Volunteers will be gathering information of who in the community has first aid training, a first aid kit, shovels, ropes, ladders and anything else that could help in a civil emergency.

This way the community will be able to quickly come together in the event of a civil emergency.

They are also taking the opportunity to show resident and visitors of an emergency kit a local woman has created.

“It all very well saying what people should have, but a lot of people don’t know where to start or how to put it together,” Linda says.

The fair will also have its trusted regulars and entertainment.

Te Aro primary is selling screen printed bags, recycled and painted pots and environmentally conscience sandwich bags.

Visitors will even have the chance to take part in the sponge throw against the teachers.

Aro Valley Pre-school is running a sausage sizzle, which will include vegetarian sausages, vegan chilli beans and sticky toffee apples.

Aro Valley Fair is on Saturday March 24 (Sunday if wet), 10am–4pm, in the Aro Valley Community Centre and Aro Park, 48 Aro Street.
